Mind's I comics
Comics have always been a big part of my life. I started reading them at the age of ten and continued avidly until I discovered sexual intercourse, discos and Tequila Sunrises at fifteen - even then, I'd sneak in a post-coital peruse of a good issue of Swamp Thing or do the folding page at the end of Mad while smoking a Seven Stars ciggie.
My brothers and I amassed a collection of the many thousands over five or six years, including DC, Marvel, Mad, Cracked, True Love, Archie, Richie Rich, war comics, Asterix, Tintin, etc.
In my late twenties, I began creating comics of my own and along with poetry and short stories published them in zine form under the masthead of 'Free Spirit.' This went on for two decades and forty odd issues - with other titles springing up like 'Scripthead' and 'Things I've Learnt As An Artist'. (see blog category 'zines' for more detail.)
This year, much to my own amusement, I have begun creating them again with a vengeance - and a bowl of luscious mirth - against a back drop of irreverence - beside a sea of near incoherence, sometimes having a cocktail at the hotel bar of sublime.
Initially, it was just a few. Then one hundred of em. Now heading towards two hundred!
Next year - there's going to be a book published. Mind's I - vol 1. (So don't read them all now.)
Comic book heroes include (in random order): Bernie Wrightson, Charles Burns, Gary Panter, Stan Lee, Art Spiegelman, Francois Mouly, Joe Kubert, Robert Kanigher, Steven Severin, Lynda Barry, David Shrigley, Charles Schultz, Dave Berg, Al Jaffee, Herge, Wiliam Gaines, Julie Doucet, Len Wein, Terry Yumura, John L. Goldwater, Jack Kirby, Paul Kirchner, Osamu Tezuka and, of course, Robert Crumb.
